1. What is the basic requirement for admission to the GSM-PhD programme?

To qualify for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidates must hold the following qualifications:
  1. Applicants are required to have a Masters Degree with CGPA of at least 3.300 or its equivalent in the relevant field; or,
     
  2. Applicants have a Masters Degree with CGPA below 3.300 or equivalent in the relevant field but have experience in research work; or,
     
  3. Applicants have obtained whatever other qualification that is approved by the UPM Senate.
     
  4. Applicants must have proficiency in the language according to the requirement of the University.

Language Proficiency Requirements:
    (English Language)

  1. A Malaysian candidate must have obtained at least a credit in English at Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia level or have passed English courses conducted at the Diploma or Bachelor's level.
     
  2. All international candidates from countries where English is not a medium of instruction must have obtained a minimum score of 550 for TOEFL or 6 for IELTS.
     
  3. A candidate without the requisite minimum score for TOEFL or IELTS may be granted a provisional admission.
     
  4. An applicant who has given a provisional offer of admission to a Master's or PhD programme will be given full admission ONLY after the applicant submits proof of achieving the minimum TOEFL or IELTS score.
     
  5. An applicant without the requisite minimum score of TOEFL or IELTS will be required to pass an English Placement Test conducted by UPM. The provisional offer will be withdrawn if the applicant fails the Test and therefore will not be accepted for the Master's or PhD programme.

    (Malay Language)

  1. All international students (except students from Indonesia and Brunei) must obtain a grade 'M' for the Malay Language course (BBM 1401 or its equivalent) to be eligible for conferral of a degree.

    M - Memuaskan/Satisfactory
     

* Note: Appropriate GMAT score is an advantage.

 

 

Relevant research experience is an added advantage.

Applicants are to ensure that a research proposal is attached with the application form.

2. What is the structure of the programme?

The structure is as below:


Semester 1 – 2

Core courses:

Research Methodology - 3 credits

Business Statistic - 3 credits

Seminar in area of specialisation - 3 credits
Special topics in area of specialisation - 3 credits

(Econometrics for Finance specialisation)

 

Semester 3 – 6

Research + Thesis Writing

3. Where and when are the classes held?

Classes are held during the evening on weekdays (6.30 p.m – 9.30 p.m) and/or on Saturdays (9.00 a.m – 12.00 noon / 2.30 p.m – 5.30 p.m).

4. What is the duration of the PhD programme?

The average period of study is 6 semesters (3 years) with a maximum of 10 semesters (5 years).

5. What is the medium of instruction for the programme?

All MSc classes are conducted in English. You are required to write your class assignments and thesis in English.

6. Does GSM offer specialisation in the PhD programme?

Yes, we offer specialisation in the areas of Management, Finance, Accounting and Marketing.

7. Is there any financial assistance?

Currently, we do not offer any scholarship or loan to students. Students are required to secure their own funding. There are many banks which offer competitive interest rates for study loans for instance the Bank of Commerce Berhad, UPM branch.

8. Is there on-campus accommodation for international students or for students from outside the Klang valley?

Students are required to arrange their own accommodation. Nonetheless, residential colleges for undergraduates may have some limited room vacancies for post-graduates. Students may contact the managers of the respective colleges directly. This will be a private arrangement between the students and the residential college concerned.

9. How much is the total fees of the PhD programme? Do I pay the full amount at the beginning of the course?

The fees for foreign students is RM10,700.00 for the first semester, RM9,650.00 for the second semester, RM5,150.00 for the third onwards and RM6,250.00 for the final semester. There are two semesters per year. The total fee for the entire programme depends on the duration of study. A bank guarantee letter or letter of sponsorship is required to certify that students have sufficient fund for the completion of the programme.

The fees for local students is RM7,200.00 for the first semester, RM6,650.00 for the second semester, RM3,650.00 for the third semester onwards and RM4,750.00 for the final semester.

11. I am interested to apply for the GSM-PhD programme. How do I apply?

To receive an application form and brochure, please send a RM1.00 stamped (within Malaysian), self addressed envelope (35cm x 25cm) together with a RM10.00 postal order payable to “Bendahari, Universiti Putra Malaysia”. Completed forms must be submitted to the address below:

The completed application forms should reach the Graduate School of Management office by the following dates:

Applicant First Semester Second Semester

International 15 March 15 July

* Applications after these dates will only be considered for the following Semester.

12. Can I apply if I don't have a basic degree but hold a professional qualification?

Yes. The followings are acceptable as equivalent to a degree programme:

 

ICSA

ACCA (Associates) & CII (Associate) & CII (Associates) – UK

CIMA (Associates), CIT (Corporate Membership) – UK

MACPA, MII & Ins. Of Bankers (Full membership) – Msia

Inst. Of Surveyor & Ins. Of Engineers (Full membership) – M’sia

Advanced Diploma from UiTM.
